Simpsons-Themed Grade School Problem

In the Simpsons episode “Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk”, Homer is told by his stock broker that he owns stock at 25 cents a share, and that if he sells all of his stock, he will make twenty-five dollars.  Homer decides to sell all of his stock immediately.

How many shares did Homer own?

Answer after the break.

Answer: Homer had 100 shares.

You can solve this pretty simply with algebra:

(25 cents/ 1 share) * Nshares = 25 dollars

( .25 dollars / 1 share ) * Nshares = 25 dollars

Nshares = 100 shares
